I learned that I am a product of my generation in that I was not taught the same way as were many of the younger members at my table. It was very evident that they are of the generation that was taught to concentrate more on their feelings and thoughts and put less emphasis on immediately editing each line of their writing. It seems as if my colleagues are much quicker at producing their writing and write much more eloquently than I have ever been able to.
It has made me give much more thought to how I will conference with my students in the next school year. I have seen firsthand what a difference it makes to encourage students to write from their hearts without worrying so much about spelling and grammar but instead concentrate on their thoughts first and worry about revisions at a later time.
Thanks Patti for commenting on today's learning. It seems by going through the writing process it makes us learn what our students go through!
